Nielsen Music Names Metallica 2017’s Top Rock Artist

2017 was a great year for Metallica following the late 2016 release of their latest studio album, “Hardwired…To Self-Destruct.” According to Nielsen Music’s year end report of album sales, Metallica took second place behind the Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 movie soundtrack album. This in turn makes Metallica the best selling rock band of the year.

Metallica’s album made the band the top selling rock album of the year with just under 2 million copies sold since its release, through both TEA (track-equivalent albums, a unit of measurement where 10 paid downloads equal one album) and SEA (on-demand audio streaming-equivalent albums, another unit of measurement where 1,500 streams equal one album).

Metallica saw a great deal of album sales courtesy of a ticket/album bundle pack that the band had offered to fans prior to the start of their massively successful tour to follow. The tour has gained millions of dollars in ticket sales, and with such a high demand for a new Metallica album, as well as a tour, it was quite a smart play on their end to offer the album along with a ticket.
