Ask anyone who works in rock and metal and they’ll tell you that rock is a more than just a genre of music—it’s a lifestyle.

The hard rock and metal world is full of bleeding hearts who eat, sleep and breath rock music. But unfortunately mainstream media and the music industry itself choose to overlook hard rock and heavy metal rather than embrace the millions of die-hard fans who have a rapidly growing appetite for new bands, new music and new content.

Rock is by no means dying out but its opportunity for growth is being severely stunted by the actions of mainstream media—like the recent cancellation of MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball.

So with the obvious lack of terrestrial rock stations across the country and virtually no presence on television—what is the future of hard rock and metal? According to one of the biggest and most influential mouths in rock:

“Satellite radio is the future.” – Jose Mangin, Sirius XM Octane | Liquid Metal.

INTERVIEW WITH SILENT THEORY

The band goes by the name of Silent Theory, but in theory that is really quite the opposite of what the band excels at. In fact, the Moscow, Idaho based modern hard rock quintet consisting of brothers Mitch Swanger (drums), Scott Swanger (guitar), George Swanger (bass), along with Nick Osborn (vocals) and Bob James (guitar) would rather you turn it up to 11 and scream your lungs out to the ten songs found on its Turkey Vulture Records debut Black Tie Affair.

INTERVIEW WITH OCEANS DIVIDE

With the release of their newest EP entitled Lipstick Lies, the Spokane based quintet known as Oceans Divide is ready to add their name to the list of bands you need to pay attention to. Their latest five song album truly rocks from start to finish.  Each song stands on its own right and could easily make it to Active Rock radio as a single.

INTERVIEW WITH MATT JONES OF THE TREATMENT

Every aspiring musician in the world has dreamed about touring with bands as big as KISS and Motley Crue—The Treatment is living it.

The UK rockers’ classic rock style and video for “Drink, Rock, Fight” caught the attention of Crue bassist Nikki Sixx who very formally invited The Treatment to The Tour…via Twitter.

I caught up with vocalist Matt Jones while on tour with KISS and Motley Crue to talk about that infamous Tweet from Nikki Sixx, their first run in the states and what it was like landing one of the biggest gigs on the planet.

BEST HEAVY METAL/ROCK SONGS WRITTEN ABOUT 9/11

Never have truer words been spoken than, "music can speak for the heart and soul."  All of us have special songs that are representations of things such as love, heartbreak, loss, anger, outrage and the like.  Just the first few notes of a particular song are enough to evoke an emotional response in us.  Some of the greatest singers/songwriters since the beginning of time have managed to encapsulate different emotions in such a way.

The Democratic National Convention got a whole lot cooler tonight, as the Foo Fighters took the stage and played a three-song set to delegates from across that Nation in Charlotte, North Carolina. The band began with a very mellow version of their 1998 hit, "My Hero" of which lead singer/guitarist Dave Grohl started out by commenting, "It's an honor to be here and I think this song makes perfect sense tonight." The band followed with "Walk" then "Wasting Light" which is off of their latest album. The almost ten minutes of playing was met with thunderous applause. Let's hope some Foo greatness was bestowed on some of the politicians there tonight.

INTERVIEW WITH STELLAR REVIVAL

If you ever want to stump a rock band, ask them how they’re different. Each will explain how their sound or their style stands out from the rest of the pack but sometimes the best answer to that question is better seen than heard—as is the case with Florida rock band Stellar Revival.

One of the fresher faces of Capitol Records, Stellar Revival is making waves with their debut single, “The Crazy Ones”, one of rock n’ roll’s most addictive releases of the year—its one of those tracks you don’t want to admit you listened to nine times in a row.

So what makes them different?

With producer Brian Howes in the mix it’s easy to lump their sound in with the Nickelbacks and Hinders of the world but there’s a Southern rock-meets-pop punk vibe that is uniquely “Stellar Revival”. Yes, the foundation of their music is similar to every other rock band doing well in radio—because it works. Their choruses are hook-ey and their live show has great energy but the ballads are what makes this band memorable—and the second that acoustic guitar comes out it’s game over. Front man Rino Cerbone could go head-to-head with just about anyone in the game and he has the band behind him to make Stellar Revival a household name after they release their debut album in January 2013.

Every signed band has a story. But not every band makes history… Otherwise can claim both.

Like the Phoenix that inspired their logo, Otherwise virtually arose from nowhere. The unsigned Las Vegas band made their mark on their hometown as the city’s go-to opener for big national acts and as the resident at the Stations Casinos—they were Sin City’s best kept secret. But apparently not everything stays in Vegas. After catching the eye of young-gun LA music manager Clay Busch, who was ironically in Vegas to sign another band, Otherwise was plucked from their hometown and taken to Los Angeles to showcase for major labels.

The rest is history—literally. In addition to claiming the title as the first rock band to have a residency in Las Vegas, Otherwise is the first unsigned band to reach No. 1 on satellite radio.

Now signed to Century Media Records, Otherwise has appeared on some of the biggest bills in the country including 48 Hours Fest, Rock on the Range, Rock Allegiance and on tours with Buckcherry, Lacuna Coil, My Darkest Days and Pop Evil, to name a few. And thanks to success on terrestrial radio with their debut single “Soldiers”, they’re selling out their own headlining shows across the country. They are arguably the biggest buzzing band in rock and they’ve done it ALL in less than a year.

There's one bad-ass auction happening right now on e-bay to help Randy Blythe, the lead singer of Lamb of God with his mounting legal costs.  Many of Blythe's bandmates and other musican friends have donated their personal items, gear and instruments to generate some much needed funds to defend Blythe's pending trial in the Czech Republic.  The auction was set up by LOG members Mark Morton (guitar), Will Adler (guitar), John Campbell (bass) and Chris Adler (drums) and all items are guaranteed to be 100% authentic, including Certificates of Authenticity.

The Florida based quartet known as The Chaos Agent has begun to make its presence known in the southeast rock scene as well as several other regional locations while sharing stages with the likes of Allele, Skindred, Flaw, Stabbing Westward and Hed P.E. to name a few. Now, the band is set to make its presence felt on radio stations nationwide as they release their single “Reborn”.

Alternative Revolt had a chance to chat with the “agents of chaos” themselves; vocalist Josh Poullion and drummer Dusty Winterrowd to find out what makes this band unique and worth your effort to check out.
