The Under the Sun Tour 2015 featuring Sugar Ray, Better Than Ezra, Uncle Kracker, and Eve6 is underway and we caught up with Kevin Griffin lead vocalist from Better Than Ezra in advance of their tour stop in Littleton, Colorado on July 28. He talks the summer tour, new album, and how he uses social media to connect with the fans.

AltRevolt: How did this tour come together?

Kevin: Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray) has put this tour together for the last four years. All of the bands are friends. They have asked us before but it just has not worked with our schedule. So when they asked us last November all of the pieces fell into place. It is a lot of moving pieces putting that together. A single tour much less four acts.

AltRevolt: Are you guys the headliner?

Kevin: We are tonight. (First date of the tour) It rotates between us, Uncle Kracker, and Sugar Ray. None of us are concerned about that. We all draw about the same on our own. It is a big party. We go second tomorrow night. And then we are last in Los Angeles. We flip flop. The tours do not work unless you can check your egos.

AltRevolt: Have you ever performed at the Botanic Gardens venue in Littleton?

Kevin: I have never played there but I have seen a Barenaked Ladies show at that venue. I think it was last year or two years ago. I was in town for something and thought it was a killer place.

AltRevolt: What can the fans expect from the setlist on this tour?

Kevin: There are four bands so you can’t do a full set. The longest we will play will be 45 minutes a piece. You want to play the hits but we going to play a couple new songs and deeper cuts. And also a few ill advised cover choices. We always like covers that people would not expect. It is going to be a chalk full set.

AltRevolt: I love is when bands play that odd ball cover song live.

Kevin: We never take ourselves too seriously. Even bands that do take themselves seriously love covers that you would not think. It is a nice way to look into the minds of the artists and see where their heads are at. Bands are fans too. Most start off as cover bands.

AltRevolt: Have you played at any venues in Denver that stand out to you?

Kevin: We played the Ogden, The Bluebird, The Gothic, and I just played the Soiled Dove acoustic. The first time we ever played in town it was at a famous cowboy bar in south Denver but I can’t think of the name.

AtlRevolt: You released a new album last fall (All Together Now). How has it been received?

Kevin: It’s been really great. We have had the highest charting single we ever had in a while with a song called “Crazy Lucky”. We have sold a respectable amount. It’s funny. Albums these days just don’t sell. It is mind boggling how different it is when I started in the business. For us we want to put out good compelling music and the idea of getting rich off it is just not realistic anymore. Now we are trying the keep our fanbase and maybe get some new ones. We like to get new music to our fans because they like what we do and it gives them a reason to come see us live. It peaks their interest and gives us a reason to go on the road. I think it is one of our best albums. We work with an amazing producer Tony Hoffer. It was a long process. It took us a while to record it but what we got I was thrilled with.

AltRevolt: How do you use social media to reach out to your fans?

Kevin: We have a great online publicity team. We work with a great company called Crowd Surf. We continue to push Instagram, Twitter, Periscope and all of that stuff. We don’t usually do things just for Youtube anymore. When you have thousands of followers on social media these are great tools to connect with them.

AltRevolt: Thanks for taking the time to talk with us before the start of the tour.

Kevin: Thank you for the call.
